Kallimasia
Kallimasia is one of the largest Mastiha villages. It is built on a verdant plain dotted with olive trees. Seven older settlements were unified to create Kallimasia. On March 22, 1881, Chios was struck by the most destructive earthquake in its history. 420 people were killed in Kalimassia and huge damages occurred. Inside the village, visitors can admire the ruins of medieval towers and several well-preserved, impressive churches. It is also worth visiting Panagia Plakidiotissa monastery, built upon the ruins of a former monastery dating from the 16th century. There is also a Female Artisans’ Cooperative operating in the village, which contributes to the preservation of local traditions. Kallimasia is the administrative seat of Ionia Municipality.
