EU herbal monograph on Pistacia lentiscus L., resin (mastix)

On July 2015, Chios mastiha (Pistacia lentiscus L., mastix) was positively evaluated by the Committee on Herbal Medicinal Products (HMPC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and received its European Union herbal monograph. This monograph comprises the scientific opinion of HMPC on safety and efficacy data concerning an herbal substance and its preparations intended for medical use.

Mastiha is considered now as a traditional medicine for both stomach disorders and skin/wounds inflammations.  According to EMA decision, mastiha, as a traditional herbal medicinal product, is used in mild dyspeptic disorders. Moreover, it is used for the symptomatic treatment of minor inflammations of the skin as an aid in healing of minor wounds. In general, Mastiha is a traditional herbal medicinal product for use in the specified indications exclusively based upon long-standing use.

You can find Chios mastiha in powder and capsules. It is recommended as a means for the relief of stomach disorders and it contributes to the hygiene of the gastrointestinal system, used additionally in our daily nutrition.
